"Bigger than a drop" illustration 1
During Covid lockdown 2020 I wrote and illustrated a childrens picture book about water conservation, a topic I am truly passionate about, having personally experienced the effects of serious drought both here in Sydney and in South Africa. In 2018 I visited family and friends in Cape Town, South Africa and I was shocked to see how badly the severe drought had impacted the city. They were counting down to “Day Zero”, the day all council taps were to be turned off and the city’s water supply shut down. Cape Town’s four million residents would have to stand in line to collect daily water rations, making it the first major city in the world to potentially run out of water. I returned home to Australia and it had it’s hottest recorded summer in 2019. The intense drought and catastrophic wildfires were devastating to farmlands and the bush. The city also felt the heat and we began to make changes to our water habits at home, which inspired this book.
