All the wheels - CYA Winner 2024

"All the wheels go round and round!" I was absolutely thrilled to hear the news that I had placed FIRST in the “Published Illustrators” category of the CYA Conference Illustration Competition 2024. The theme was “in motion” and I wanted to create a nostalgic scene of kids on various modes of transport that brought out the fun of a summer childhood. I remember watching Superman (the original movie with Christopher Reeve) when I was 5 years old and being convinced I could fly by just tying a swimming towel round my neck. Crashing down to reality meant the next best thing was speeding around on bikes and scooters with my friends... and letting our imaginations soar! The long format of the illustration is basically a landscape double page spread for a children's book. I wanted it to stretch out as long as possible in order to capture each character speeding along one after another, their squeals filling the air.
